The thing that shocks him most is seeing his father cry. His father’s sadness scares Stephen more than the argument itself. The fight shows Stephen that adults can be unhappy and fight about big ideas. This breaks the warm picture of family in his mind. After that dinner Stephen begins to notice the hard, serious side of life. He learns that words and beliefs can hurt people. The scene pushes him to think about his own beliefs. In short, the Christmas dinner moves Stephen from simple child feelings toward deeper, more adult thoughts about family, shame, and religion.
