Summry :
He thinks poetry is an imitation of an imitation, our world is an imitation of the one and poetry is an imitation of our worlf. Poets are irrational and devoted of reason.

Concept : The elements/parts of the text + Tragedy and Comedy
Summary :
Though he agrees with Plato's view on poetry being an imitation, he says that poetry is more universal and better than history (poetry tells the possibilities that could have happened)

Hamartia : all targic heros must have tragic flaws.
Catharsis : The Purge of the emotions of pity and fear that the audience got throughout the tragedy at the end of the play.

Concept : The writer, poets should imitate other poets.
Summry :
He believed that the main goal of literature is to "Teach and Delight" and the greatest reward for the poet is the adulation of the public.

Title : he was considered the first comparative critic in literary history (cuz he used Hebrew quotations in his writings)
Concept : The Sublime (Echo of greatness of spirit)
Focus : a single element of the text.
Summary :
Good literature must come from good writers and good audiences who can see, and feel the Sublime which is the feeling of greatness in a literary work.

* He has a list of the Five elements of the Sublime.
1. The ability to form great and powerful idea
2. Strong, inspired passion
3. Proper use of figures
4. Nobel diction
5. Dignified composition

* Everyone has a touch of the Sublime because humans are from a higher nature "almost in the image of the divine"

- Dante Alighieri / 1265 - 1321 / Florence - Tuscany Italy./ The Middle Ages.

Book : La Divina Comida (The Divine Comedy) 1310 - 1321 (took 11 years to finish all 3 parts)

Concept : The Use of Verancular (Everyday common language) in writing serious literature.
Summry :
In the introduction to Paradise, in "Can Grande Della Scala" (The letter to Can Grande) he explains that common language is suitable and beautiful language to be used for literature.

- Sir Philip Sidney / 1554 - 1586 / English. / The Renaissance.
Book : An Apology for Poetry 1595 (first named "Defense of Poesy").
Concept : uses ideas from ancient writers and critics and improve upon them, adding his own ideas.
Summry :
He defended poetry, calling it the noblest works of all mankind. He calls the poets the advocate of virtue and no one exposes vices more clearly.
Poetry teaches through influencing the emotions just like the religion.

- Alexander Pope / 1688 - 1744 / English / The Neoclassical Age (or) The Augustan Age (or) The Age of Reason.

Concept : Establishing clear rules for the 18th C verse.
Poetic diction - Heroic couplet - The Personification of the abstract ideas
Summry :
Classicals understood beauty and truth of "perfection", thus, the poet should copy them instead of nature.
Thus, the good poet should have natural genius - knowledge of classics - politeness and grace - understanding of the rules of poetry.

- William Wordsworth / 1770 - 1850 / English / The Romanticism.
Book : The Lyrical Ballads 1798 (co-authored by S.T Coleridge)
Concept : foucs on the common and Rural people, using a language that reflects common people.
Summry:
Wordsworth believed that poetry should focus on common people in everyday life rather than royals because he thought that common life provided a better ground for expressing human emotions.

* Poetry, to Wordsworth, is the overflow of powerful emotions recollected in tranquility. (This was in the preface)

* The Preface to the Lyrical Ballads was published in its second edition in 1800.
