What is "The fate of Milo"

In Wuthering Heights, Catherine Earnshaw says that anyone who tries to separate her from Heathcliff will "meet the fate of Milo." This shows how strong and their relationship is.

ما هو "مصير ميلو":

في رواية مرتفعات ويذرينغ، تقول كاثرين إيرنشو إن من يحاول فصلها عن هيثكليف "سيواجه مصير ميلو".


The phrase "the fate of Milo" refers to Milo of Croton, a famous Greek wrestler known for his strength. According to legend, Milo once tried to split a tree in the middle of the forest with his hands, but his hands got stuck when the tree spilt returned and closed on his hands, so he was trapped and unable to escape, then the wolves attacked Milo and no one heard his call for help because he was in the middle of the forest.

Catherine wanted to keep both men in her life. This was a very silly idea. She wanted to keep Heathcliff while being married to Edgar, not as a husband or lover, but to control him. Catherine's ego was split between:

1. Heathcliff (The Id or The Bad Inside Her): The part that wants to do lowly things.

2. Edgar (The Superego or The Good Inside Her): The part that tells her what is right and wrong.

أرادت كاثرين الاحتفاظ بالرجلين في حياتها. وكان ذلك ساذجًا جدًا. أرادت الاحتفاظ بهيثكليف رغم أنها متزوجة من إدغار، ليس كزوج أو حبيب، بل للتحكم فيه. كان غرور كاثرين منقسمًا بين:

In the end, good won, and she chose Edgar again. At first, she wanted to keep both because she didn't have the right environment to become a proper lady, and her mother was not there to guide her.

He wanted to take revenge upon Hindley, and he came back to see Catherine for the last time and then kill Hindley and himself.
