Duality

Human language has a unique feature called duality, meaning it works on two levels at the same time. On one level, we make simple sounds like “b,” “n,” and “i.” These sounds don’t have any meaning alone. But when we put them together in different ways, like “bin” or “nib,” they create words with different meanings. This allows us to make many words from a small set of sounds.

In animals, each signal is a single fixed sound that can’t be broken into parts. For example, a dog’s “woof” might mean “I’m happy,” but dogs don’t use separate sounds to create new meanings. If dogs had duality, they could make different barks to mean different things, like “oowf” for “I’m hungry” or “foow” for “I’m bored.”

Productivity in Human Language

Animal communication is different because animals have only a limited number of signals, which they can’t change or expand. For example, cicadas have only four signals, and vervet monkeys have 36 calls. They can’t make new sounds for new ideas. In one experiment, food was placed at the top of a tall tower for bees. Bees usually tell each other where food is by doing a “bee dance,” but they couldn’t communicate the location because their signals don’t include “up.” Bees can’t make new signals for directions they haven’t used before.

p.63: Catherine stays at Thrushcross Grange for five weeks until Christmas. She returns looking and acting different—she’s well-dressed and well-behaved. Hindley sees this as a chance to make Catherine look down on Heathcliff by treating him as a servant and even making her think of him as one: “Heathcliff, you may come forward…You may come and wish Miss Catherine welcome like all other servants” (Pp.64-65).

Catherine is now married to Edgar Linton and she takes Nelly with her to the Grange to wait on Catherine. Nelly shows that the couple is happy because the Lintons yield to Catherine’s will and they humour her dispositions, overlooking the fact that Catherine as well tries her best to redeem the differences between her and them. Nelly abides by the instructions of Mr Linton not to vex Catherine, she hasn’t abided by the instructions of the doctor previously and kept vexing Catherine until “the master” Edgar Linton was provoked by her actions “That’s good news… happiness” (pp.111-112). 
Happiness was within the grasp of the married couple, and they have been perfectly happy if it were not for the sudden interruption of this happiness.

Nelly is gathering apples in the garden when she heard a voice calling her from behind; it sounds familiar, it is Heathcliff’s who is here to meet Catherine: “It ended…I opened the door” (pp.113-114).

Edgar doesn’t allow Catherine to receive Heathcliff (the plough boy) in the reception room, he expects that Catherine would receive in the kitchen! Catherine is aware of the class distinction imposed on her and her friend and orders Nelly to set a table in the same room to receive Heathcliff: “No,… real” (p.116).

Not knowing how to receive him, Edgar is forced to address Heathcliff as a gentleman seeing the transformation of Heathcliff: “Sit down, sir,… please her” (p.117).

There follows a rationale of the reason(s) which make Heathcliff choose to reside in Wuthering Heights, a place where he has been degraded and destroyed: “What do you think…the other” (pp.120-121). 
Then Nelly tries to warn Catherine that Heathcliff might have hidden designs towards Hindley, Catherine, however, thinks that she comes between Heathcliff and Hindley and will keep her brother from any harm: “None for my friend… perpetual sunshine” (pp.121-122).

Isabella is embarrassed by Catherine who humiliates her in Heathcliff’s presence: “Catherine... beyond expression” (p.128).
