Q5: Wuthering Heights: "Catherine's choices" as she herself stated in the novel "killed her" What in your opinion caused Catherine's death?

Catherine Earnshaw’s death in Wuthering Heights happens for several connected reasons. It is not only medical or only emotional; it is a mix of her inner conflict, society’s pressure, painful relationships, and childbirth.

First, Catherine feels split inside. Part of her belongs to Heathcliff — wild, free, and deep. The other part wants comfort, marriage, and social respect with Edgar Linton. This divided feeling makes her unhappy and confused. She cannot live fully as either person.

Second, society and class matter. In the novel, marrying Heathcliff would lower her social position, so Catherine chooses Edgar for money and status. That choice gives material comfort but makes her feel guilty and empty because she has given up her true love.

Third, the relationships around her are harmful. Heathcliff and Catherine hurt each other with pride, silence, and jealousy. Edgar cannot understand the deep bond between Catherine and Heathcliff. These fights and coldness increase her stress and weaken her health.

Fourth, the direct physical cause is childbirth and the fever after delivery. In Brontë’s time, pregnancy and labor were dangerous. Catherine’s body was already weak from long stress, so the pregnancy and birth made her health worse and led to her collapse.

Also, Brontë uses Catherine’s death to show a lesson: when people hide or deny their true feelings because of social rules, they can destroy themselves. Her death is both a real medical collapse and a symbol of a life split in two.
