Roger saw that his wife refuses to tell the name of her partner in sin, and this made him angry and he had sworn to dedicate his life to know her paramour.
When he was with the red indians, he acquired part of their culture and he is no more the civilised one and the man of books.
He had taken new identity and he will live obscured in the settlement
His name is a tag name which indicates his character
Roger is the collector of information
And Chillingworth is coldness, so he is the cold collector of information.
He had taken the profession of a physician so that he would be entitled and allowed to enter every house in the settlement to examine people.
He is man of books and the situation required him to be man of action so he will act coldly and repressed his anger as if a snake crept and awakened Evil in him.
When he knew that Aurther is the partner in sin, he tortured him for merely seven years by keeping asking him questions that are annoying and he kept eating on his soul till the man died.

When Hester decided to tell the secret of her husband to her paramour, she was hesitant whether to tell him or not, but when they met and when he told her that he wished for having a friend to tell him his secret or an enemy to fight with, she took that as a chance to expose the true identity of her husband and she told him that you have been dwelling all these seven years with your deadliest enemy.
He was shocked and Hester asked for forgiveness but he refused.
Ans this was the first time she asks for forgiveness and she did not ask for forgiveness from God before because she considered Aurther the centre of her life.

Aurther was the victim of revenge for Roger and he was the Victom of Love for Hester

Because they met in the forest and it as a dark place similar to Eden after the fall and they were alone and the disguises fell and they are acting as their true selves
