Chillingworth wants Dimmesdale to confess his secret sin, believing that hidden guilt destroys him. Dimmesdale refuses, saying that the confession can be between the person and God and only God can judge people and the sins.


This shows:
- Chillingworth is smart and cold. He wants to know Arthur's secret (sin).

- Dimmesdale feels of sin and suffers inside. He thinks spiritual matters are personal.

The argument shows how hidden sin can hurt even when you're judged by yourself.
