Answer the following questions: (10 marks each)
Q1: Detect the meaning of two of the following as intended by the writer:
a. The writer's statement that he found the story in a drawer in the custom house?
for Two reasons:
1. He is not brave to challenge the Puritans because all the people in power (Authority) were Puritans. So, he will be in danger.
2. When you know this is the story of a living person, it becomes more interesting, and you are more interested to read than fiction.
b. Roger Chillingworth unwillingness to take revenge on Hester.?
Revenge ruined him, making him worse instead of better. He knows what is right and wrong, knows that he becomes evil, but he cannot help it. He believes fate has put him to take revenge on her partner in sin. Losing himself in the process. He has a plan in mind (revenge). It is activated because Hester don't say the name of her partner in sin. He sees revenge as challenge to his mind and as reaction to his love for Hester, because he loves Hester and cannot hurt her.
c. Chillingworth chooses to be a physician.?
Mr. Prynne named himself Roger Chillingworth (and works as physician) to hide his true self and gain access to the community and every person and house, because he is a doctor investigate the mental and physical illness of people. This allows him to uncover the identity of Hester’s partner in sin, because Chillingworth believes that Hester’s partner in sin is suffering from guilt or fear.
Q2: Hester Prynne asserts that her daughter's earthly father will never be known and that Pearl has only a heavenly father. What does she mean? What does the writer mean by assimilating her to Virgin Mary?
Answer: The connection between Hester and the Virgin Mary, and whether it's a profane or sacred image. It's not just about Christianity, but the image and symbolism it creates. The writer compares Hester to the Virgin Mary, who, like Hester, was considered a sinner at the start of her story.
In the Bible, the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus without a father, and in a similar way, Hester's daughter, Pearl, has no earthly father. Hester herself later says that Pearl will have no earthly father, only a heavenly one, which connects the child (Pearl) to Jesus in a symbolic way.
The writer seems to think that Hester, like Jesus, could bring change to the world, but in a different way. While Jesus changed the world for the better, Hester's message may be a more controversial one.

Q: Hester is a woman who breaks the cultural bonds to gain personal power. Do you agree? Argue cleverly.
Answer: Hester Prynne is in pain because society has rejected her. They banished her. Yes, you are free to choose wherever you go, but do not stay here. And she chose to stay on the side of Boston. She could leave, but she chose to stay away from others (lonely life). She hopes that by staying, she can show the community that she can change and earn their acceptance.
Hester Prynne sews clothes and gives them to poor people for free. they need her skills. Her sewing is like art—it fights the Puritans rules. The poor people began buying Hester's clothes, which got her the marketing she needed. She became important, with people asking her to make their clothes. not fully accepted, she changes how people dress and think. Making people wear what she wants them to wear. Her own fashion. So, she will refashion, remake, and redesign people. Hester changed people from the outside and waiting for them to change from the inside (to accept her). When people liked her fashion, it meant they accepted her and her mistake. Normalizing her sin doesn’t mean everyone can do wrong; it means that everyone may sin. Society must not be so harsh about sin because human err. If they keep judging others, they only create more problems.
When people mock and insult her, she keeps calm and silent. Her silent work slowly changes people, showing her strength is in small actions.
The Scarlet Letter gave her super power to see sin in others and in herself to live with her shame to keep her sane and it’s another illusion (fantasy).
