Poetry 2nd monthly exam with answers

Q 1/ which poems had the stage metaphor? Mention the poems and explain the stage metaphor.

- (what is our life theme)
He opens up a poem with a question about the nature of human life. The poem is constructed upon the famous stage metaphor. He compares human life to a play of suffering and pain where the Joy we get is only short or temporary just like the music in the intervals between the acts wombs.
We get the rules we are forced to play in our mothers wombs (we get our features gender, nationality, religion, sects,...) and we continue to play to the last minute whether we like it or not.
The only thing that is real in the Play of Life is death "Only we die in earnest, that is not jest.".

Tickle treasure, abhorred of reason:
Dangerous to deal with, vain, of none avail;
Costly in keeping, past not worth two peason;

1. Give figure of speech in the underlined line.
- Alliteration.
2. Identify the name of the poet and poem.
- the poet: Henry Howard.
The poem: Beauty.

3. What is the mean of "vain, of none avail"?
- Beauty is risky to deal with because it is proud and worthless since it fades away
quickly.

Q 3/
1. Slant rhyme: refers to words that have similar but not identical sounds, creating a near rhyme or half rhyme.
For example, "prove" and "glove."

2. Anastrophe: Involves the inversion of the usual word order for the sake of emphasis or meter.
For example, "fly small" the original "small fly"

3. What is the form and structure of Walter Ralegh's "What is our life"?
- Form and structure:
10 lines poem
Composed of rhyming couplets (5 couplets)
Rhyme scheme: (aa,bb,cc,dd,ee)
Sixteen century poetry second exam 1st course

Q1_ Give the meaning of the following words in English 5 only

1_ idly = carelessly
2_ behold = watch/ see
3_ jeopardy = danger
4_ assail = attack
5_ frail = weak
6_ wail = cry


Q2_ Identify the lines ( mention the poet) and explain the lines meaning.

_ The poet is Henry Howard and the poem is Beauty

_ Here in these lines the poet address beauty, and he thinks that beauty is fragile, temporary, useless, weak and that is going to wither away as time passes.


Q3_ Answer either A or B

A_ Comment on the form and structure of Walter Raleigh "what is our life"

_ The poem is composed of couplets ( a couplet is a pair of lines that rhyme together )

_ the rhyme is ( aa, bb, cc, dd, ee )
_ the rhythm is the iambic pentameter
_ the poem is only 10 lines so it's not a sonnet


B_ what is the major theme in Edmund Spenser sonnet 54

_The major theme is
Courtly love tradition , rejected love, unrequited love
The more that she rejects him the more he clings to her the poet is madly in love with his beloved while she's completely careless towards him she despise him ( when i laugh she mocks when I cry she laugh ) yet he can't stop loving her
