Sonnet 75

Theme: the immortality of love through poetry.
The poet endeavors to write down the name of the beloved on the sand twice.
He fails in both of his endeavors because of the waves which wash away the names.
He then proposes to write it down in his poems and doing so it can never be wiped out because poetry can stand the test of time.
His beloved story well live on Play (The Fame) that acquire from his poems.
while death will defeat the whole world their love will never be defeated. It becomes immortal because of poetry.

Form and structure: (abab,bcbc,cdcd,ee)
Rhythms = Iambic penta meter.

Figures of speech:
1. Metaphor: I wrote her name upon the strand.
2. Personification: but came the tide and made my pains his prey.
3. Anastrophe: virtues rare
(The correct: rare virtues)


Meaning of words:
Strand= coast
Tide = hunter
The poet pains= prey

What is our life
- by Sir Wlater Ralegh:
Theme: The poet ruiminates about the nature of human life.
He opens up a poem with a question about the nature of human life. The poem is constructed upon the famous stage metaphor. He compares human life to a play of suffering and pain where the Joy we get is only short or temporary just like the music in the intervals between the acts wombs.
We get the rules we are forced to play in our mothers wombs (we get our features gender, nationality, religion, sects,...) and we continue to play to the last minute whether we like it or not.
The only thing that is real in the Play of Life is death "Only we die in earnest, that is not jest.".


Form and structure:
10 lines poem
Composed of rhyming couplets (5 couplets)
Rhyme scheme: (aa,bb,cc,dd,ee)


Figures of speech:

1. Conceit = extended metaphor
- life = play
- joy = music
- mother wombs = tiring houses
- graves = cartains
- end of the play = death

2. Simile: are like drawn

3. Alliteration:
A. Sharp spectator
B. Searching sun

Meaning of words:
Amiss = wrong or mistake
Jest = joke
