In the book *Joseph Andrews*, the main character, Joseph, is a good guy who gets into trouble. He gets hurt and robbed, and people leave him to die. But then a kind man finds him. This man is a simple coach driver, not rich or important, but he helps Joseph. This coach driver is like the "Good Samaritan" from the Bible. The story shows us that even regular people can be heroes by being kind and helpful.

Of writing Lives in general: despite the humorous and ironic manner of the narrator, Fielding continues to offer his theory of fiction. Examples are morally instructive; the writer offers models of behaviour. He mocks those who claim the great authors of the past are 'obsolete'; he absurdly praises as examples of useful modern literature various cheap romances of his own time.

Adams had no nearer access to Sir Thomas through the waiting-gentlewoman; for Sir Thomas was too apt to estimate men merely by their dress or fortune; and my lady was a woman of gaiety, who had been blessed with a town education, and never spoke of any her country neighbours by any other appellation than that of the brutes. They both regarded the curate as a kind of domestic only, belonging to the parson of the parish, who was at this time at variance with the knight; for the parson had for many years lived in a constant wars..
Slipslop She had in these disputes a particular advantage over Adams: for she was a mighty affector of hard words, which she used in such a manner that the parson, who durst not offend her by calling her words in question, was frequently at some loss to guess her meaning, and would have been much less puzzled by an Arabian manuscript.
