3. Personality & Characteristics: Olivia is a complex character with many things. She is seen as judgmental and overindulgent. At the start, she is in deep mourning for her dead brother and has decided not to marry or even go outside for seven years. However, she quickly falls in love with Cesario (Viola in disguise) and forgets these vows. Like Duke Orsino, another character in the play, Olivia seems to enjoy being sad and is quick to change who she loves.
4. Importance of the Character: Olivia is important in the story. Her decision to mourn her dead brother sets the stage for the events of the play. Her love for Cesario (Viola) creates a love triangle that is one of the main sources of conflict in the story.
