"In mysticism, at all times, the inner world of man has been revealed, standing in contrast to the world of the external man. The mystical revelations of the inner man have always taught, in various forms, about the microcosmic nature of humanity. Mystical experience unveils within a person a cosmos, the entire vast universe. Mysticism is deeply opposed to any closed, isolated individualism detached from cosmic life, and to any form of psychologism. Mystical immersion in oneself is always an exit from oneself, a breakthrough beyond boundaries. Every mysticism teaches that the depth of a person is more than human, that it contains a mysterious connection with God and the world.

"The true exit from oneself, from one's isolation and detachment, is hidden within oneself, not outside, in the inner, not the outer. This is what all mysticism teaches. The person taught by psychology is still an external, not an inner person. The psychic realm is not yet the mystical realm. The inner person is spiritual, not merely psychic. The mystical realm is spiritual, deeper, and more primordial than the psychic realm. Historically, phenomena belonging to the astral plane of a person have also been called mystical. Mysticism had not yet been sufficiently separated from magic. But in the strict, differentiated, absolute sense of the word, mysticism can only be called that which pertains to the spiritual plane. In mysticism, there is a spiritual daring and initiative of the inner person, of the deepest depths of the spirit. Purely psychic and astral phenomena cannot yet be called mystical and, more correctly, may be termed magical.

"Mysticism animates and spiritualizes the origins and roots of all religious life. Mysticism is the existential foundation of all religious consciousness, the dark source of religious life. Religion translates into consciousness and into life what is immediately experienced and revealed in mysticism."

"In the primary book of Kabbalah, the Zohar, and in Boehme’s Mysterium Magnum (his commentary on the first book of Moses), the chains of limitation and suppression of the old consciousness of humanity are removed from the Bible, and the truth about the cosmic man is partially revealed. Kabbalah teaches about the Heavenly Adam. “Man,” says the Zohar, “is simultaneously the culmination and the highest point of creation. Therefore, he was created on the seventh day. As soon as man appeared, everything was completed, both the higher and lower worlds, because everything is contained in man; he unites all forms.”

“He is not only the image of the world, a universal being, including the Absolute Being: he is also, above all, the image of God, taken in the totality of His infinite attributes. He is the divine presence on earth; he is the Heavenly Adam, who, coming from the supreme and primordial darkness, creates this earthly Adam.” “Within lies the mystery of the heavenly man. Just as the earthly man, the Heavenly Adam is internal, and everything happens below as it does above.” In the Kabbalah, there is already a profound teaching about the Androgyne. “Every form,” says the Zohar, “in which the male and female principles are not found is not a higher and complete form. The Holy One finds His place only where these two principles are perfectly united... The name of man can only be given to the man and woman united as one being.” Man serves as a mediator and connector between God and nature. Both God and nature are reflected in his dual existence.

"“When the lower world,” says the Zohar, “is spiritualized by the fiery thirst of the higher world, the latter descends to it. In man, this desire reaches consciousness and supreme power, and in man and through man, the two worlds converge and penetrate each other more and more.”

"Kabbalah contains a profound anthropology, fully consonant with Christian truth. The truth about man was not fully revealed in the Christian Church, which preserved the old biblical anthropology for the sake of redemption.

But a greater truth about man was revealed in mysticism, and, first and foremost, in Kabbalistic mysticism, connected with the very origins of man. It is in Kabbalah that the truth about man as the image and likeness of God is revealed. But in Kabbalah, the truth about man had not yet become dynamic or creative.

"In the Hermetic books, we also find a high teaching about man. “Let us dare to say,” says Hermes Trismegistus, “that man is a mortal god and that the heavenly god is an immortal man. Thus, all things are governed by the world and man.” And Hermes Trismegistus also says: “The lord of eternity is the first god, the world is the second, and man is the third. God, the creator of the world and all it contains, governs this whole and subjects it to man's control. The latter makes everything the object of his activity."

"Brilliant anthropological insights, surpassing their time, are revealed in the greatest of mystic-gnostics of all time—Jakob Boehme. For Boehme, anthropology is inextricably linked to Christology. The teaching of Adam is inseparable from the teaching of Christ. Boehme daringly and brilliantly brings Christ and Adam closer together. Boehme’s First Adam is the same Heavenly Adam of the Kabbalah. And Christ is the Absolute Man, the Heavenly Adam. Boehme's entire anthropology is connected with his teaching on the Androgyne, to which we shall repeatedly return. Boehme’s overwhelming natural philosophy, though not fully understandable to us, assumes that man is a microcosm and that everything happening in man happens in the cosmos. Soul and nature are one.

"Boehme must enter our spiritual life as an eternal element, for never before had human gnosis risen to more superhuman heights. “I do not need your methods and techniques, nor your formulas, for I did not learn this from you: I have another teacher—and this teacher is all of Nature. I did not learn my philosophy, astrology, and theology from man or through man, but from Nature itself.” One senses this superhuman, natural-divine origin of Boehme’s knowledge.

“By my own powers, I am as blind as any other man, and just as powerless, but in the spirit of God, my inborn spirit sees through everything, although not constantly, but only when the spirit of God’s Love breaks through my spirit, and then the animal nature and Divinity become one Being, one understanding, and one light. And I am not unique in this; all people are like this.” Sophia—God's Wisdom—can be revealed in every person, and then true gnosis is born."
