The founder of a major microchip producer has reinstated his Taiwanese citizenship and pledged to spend $32 million of his own money to train "civilian warriors" to prepare for a Chinese invasion.

Billionaire Robert Tsao, founder of United Microelectronics Corp, announced at a Thursday press conference that the Chinese Communist Party's threat to Taiwan was growing. The 75-year-old says he plans to train "three million people in three years," and will work with the island's civilian defense organization - the Kuma Academy.

One aspect of dictatorships that citizens of democratic nations often find puzzling is how the population can be convinced to support such dystopian policies. How do they get people to run those concentration camps? How can they get so many people to support policies that, to any outsider, are so needlessly destructive, cruel, and dumb?

The answer lies in forced preference falsification. When those who speak up in principled opposition to a dictator’s policies are punished and forced into silence, those with similar opinions are forced into silence as well, or even forced to pretend they support policies in which they do not actually believe. Emboldened by this facade of unanimity, supporters of the regime’s policies, or even those who did not previously have strong opinions, become convinced that the regime’s policies are just and good—regardless of what those policies actually are—and that those critical of them are even more deserving of punishment.

Biden administration approves $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan

The Biden administration informed Congress on Friday that it approved a billion-dollar arms sale to Taiwan.

The impending sale, which is likely to further increase tensions between the United States and China, will include up to 60 anti-ship missiles, up to 100 air-to-air missiles, and a $655 million logistics plan for Taiwan’s surveillance radar program, the administration said.

EcoHealth Alliance – a group whose risky bat coronavirus research with Chinese lab has stirred controversy – received a new $1 million grant from the U.S. government for pandemic prevention.

UK’s Ivy Farm opens the “largest cultivated meat pilot plant” in Europe

Ivy Farm, a cultivated meat startup in the UK, recently unveiled what it claims to be Europe’s largest cultivated meat pilot plant in Oxford, a city just outside of the capital London.

The food-tech startup, which has raised over $30 million, is on a mission to create “real, guilt-free meat” to tackle one of the world’s biggest climate polluters – industrial agriculture – and to help the world reach its net zero goals.

Ivy Farm grows pork stem cells in large fermentation tanks in order to produce real meat, which it claims has a healthier nutritional profile and a more sustainable greenhouse gas footprint than pork from slaughtered pigs.
