Mumford & Sons frontman and famous singer reveals his sexual abuse as a child and describes how the experience had the potential to turn him into an abuser:
Singer Marcus Mumford of the successful band Mumford & Sons now reveals in his first solo song, "Cannibal," that he was sexually abused as a 6-year-old.
His mother - who along with his father was heavily involved as international leaders in the free church charismatic Vineyard church movement, learned in this way now 30 years later what had happened.
The abuse didn't happen at home or in church.
Marcus says his whole life has been covered with layers of shame.
His song about the abuse is a great, powerful and important signal for many other affected men and boys, especially celebrities who have experienced sexual abuse, to go public with it and seek help.
It wasn't until 2018 that friends and family urged him, as he was acting increasingly out of character, to seek help and worked through his childhood trauma with a therapist:
When the memories came up, he threw up.
He subsequently released the memory of his abuse experience in his first solo single: "Cannibal."
The lyrics say:

In the lyrics he describes how the experience of sexual abuse as a child triggers the potential within you to drive you to become a perpetrator yourself:
He added: 'And for some reason, and I can’t really understand why, I didn’t become a perpetrator of sexual abuse – although I’ve done my fair share of c**tish behaviour.'
What a precedent statement - that could save many many affected who are frozen in shame not only of the abuse itself but of something that wants to drive them to become perpetrators:

Band split over political viewpoints
Co-founder, banjo player Winston Marshall, was pressured by management to leave the band in 2021 after he publicly commented on U.S. journalist Andy Ngo's book:
In a 1,263-word essay, Marshall described how his sin of 'innocuous' endorsement of Andy Ngo's book on far-Left extremist group Antifa triggered 'tens of thousands of angry retweets and comments'.
He said he 'failed to foresee' his praise of Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan To Destroy Democracy 'could be interpreted as approval of the equally abhorrent Far-Right' and feared it would bring his bandmates 'more trouble'.
Marshall wrote he could have stayed with the group and 'continued to self-censor', but believed it would 'erode my sense of integrity'.
The folk rock musician was attacked on social media earlier after calling Mr Ngo's book 'important' and describing the US journalist - who has been attacked while covering street clashes - a 'brave man'.
This had sparked a bullying shitstorm on social media.
The singer said he had begged Winston not to quit, adding that 'I think you can disagree and work together' - to no avail.
Following allegations he was 'endorsing Fascism' - claims he branded 'ludicrous' - band members reportedly asked him to leave the group.
In March the banjoist and guitarist said he was stepping back from the group, leading one critic of cancel culture to write: 'Never appease the hate mob, you should have stood by your words'.
