Ursula von der Leyen is said to have negotiated a billion-dollar vaccine deal via text messages. She does not want to disclose the SMS - that is not legally necessary. The EU Ombudsman's Office finds this "implausible".

The EU Commission and its boss Ursula von der Leyen are getting into new trouble over their handling of SMS and chat messages. The EU Ombudsman's Office on Friday published an investigative report on allegedly untraceable messages between von der Leyen and Albert Bourla, the head of U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer. In it, ombudsman Emily O'Reilly sharply criticizes the commission's behavior - and calls on it to seriously search for the messages.

The New York Times had reported in April 2021 that von der Leyen and Bourla had exchanged text messages for more than a month to frame the contract, announced a short time later, to supply up to 1.8 billion doses of Corona vaccine.
