The discoveries by the two Nobel Prize laureates were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020.

Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times. ✨

Jon Fosse

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2023 is awarded to the Norwegian author Jon Fosse, β€œfor his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable.”

His immense oeuvre written in Norwegian Nynorsk and spanning a variety of genres consists of a wealth of plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children’s books and translations. While he is today one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world, he has also become increasingly recognised for his prose.

Antimatter falls down, not up ! CERN experiment confirms theory : Physicists demonstrated the existence of gravity between antimatter and Earth, who have made the first direct observation of free-falling antimatter atoms.

The ALPHA-g experiment is magnetically trapped antihydrogens are directed down, so that antiatoms began to escape the trap. These escapees strike the walls of the chamber where annihilation creates a flash of light within a scintillation detector. The team observed about 80% of the annihilations below the centre, suggesting that the antiatoms fall under gravity once released from the trap.

However, ALPHA-g found that antiatoms experienced acceleration due to gravity that is about 0.75 of that experienced by normal matter. General relativity predicts that matter & antimatter fall at exactly the same rate, so a future measurement of any difference, however small, would imply radically new physics beyond the Standard Model. ✨

Fermilab's Muon g-2 experiment has taken the world's most precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon !

Physicists now have a new measurement of a property of Muon called the anomalous magnetic moment that improves the precision of their previous result by a factor of 2.

The difference of g from 2 or 'g minus 2' can be attributed to the muon’s interactions with particles in a quantum foam that surrounds it. These particles blink in & out of existence & like subatomic 'dance partners', grab the muon’s hand & change the way the muon interacts with the magnetic field. The Standard Model incorporates all known 'dance partner' particles & predicts how the quantum foam changes g. But there might be more. Physicists are excited about the possible existence of as-yet-undiscovered particles that contribute to the value of g-2 & would open the window to exploring new physics. ✨

The new results of Muon g-2 experiment were unveiled in a scientific seminar, the scientific paper is available here

LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is produced by Stimulated emission, in which a photon of energy hf stimulates a photon from its excited state to ground state (stimulated means the event is triggered by the external photon) & then the atom emits an additional photon which have the same energy hf, same phase, polarisation & direction of travel.

For a large number of atoms we must have a situation called Population inversion, where more electrons are in higher energy states (excited states) than in lower energy states (typically the ground state) within the active medium of a laser. It is achieved by pumping energy into the active medium, causing electrons to occupy higher energy states, particularly metastable states. ✨
