LINKING WORDS AND PHRASES

✴️ To make your piece of writing more interesting, you can use a variety of linking words and phrases to join sentences or ideas together.

e.g. Joyce has got red hair. She's got freckles .
✔️Joyce has got red hair and freckles.

David is a tall man . He is in his late forties.
✔️David is a taff man who is in his late forties.

Bridget is an attractive woman. She's got shoulder-length hair.
✔️Bridget is an attractive woman with shoulder-length hair.

She is tall. She is thin.
✔️She is both tall and thin.

✴️ You can join descriptions of similar personal qualities by using in addition, also, and, moreover, etc. e. g.

She is cheerful. She is always smiling. She always behaves politely.
✔️She is cheerful and is always smiling. Moreover, she always behaves politely.

✴️ You can join descriptions of contrasting qualities by using but, on the other hand, however, nevertheless, etc. e. g.

He is clever and always does well at school. He can be bossy at times.
✔️ He is clever and always does well at school. However, he can be bossy at times.
What do IELTS Examiners want?

IELTS Examiners are looking for a mixture of simple, compound and complex sentences, and also a range of grammatical structures within your sentences. Here's what their assessment criteria say:

▪️Band 5: uses only a limited range of structures; attempts complex sentences but these tend to be less accurare than simple sentences.
▪️Band 6:  uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms; makes some errors in grammar and punctuation but they rarely reduce communication.
▪️Band 7: uses a variety of complex structures; produces frequent error-free sentences
▪️Band 8: uses a wide range of structures; makes only very occasional errors
▪️Band 9: uses a wide range of structures with full flexibility and accuracy; any errors are 'slips' (i.e. forgetfulness, not because of a lack of grammar)

9) tOXiC [taksik] adj. When something is toxic, it is poisonous. Toxic things are very dangerous. -» Please check the label to see if the product is toxic.

10)vary [veari] v. To vary means to be different from another thing in size or amount. -» The heights of the people in my class vary by a large amount.
