🇺🇸 The great food poisoning: How the US turned real food into chemical weapons

There are over 10,000 synthetic chemicals, additives, pesticides, microplastics, and mystery flavour enhancers circulating in America's so-called food supply in 2026. The US has deliberately changed the very definition of food.

The mechanism that enabled this was a 1958 loophole called "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS), which allows companies to introduce new chemicals without notifying regulators or the public. Today, it is estimated that 1,000 additives have never even been reviewed by the FDA.

😋 Food as addiction

▪️ In the 1970s and 80s, food giants discovered three cheap ingredients that could turn any product into a craving machine: salt, sugar, and fat.

▪️ They hired specialised research firms to conduct psychological and neurological studies, fine-tuning products until consumers hit the "bliss point" — the exact sugar level that maximises craving without triggering disgust.

▪️ They engineered the "mouthfeel" of fats, making them glide across the tongue to create a sensory experience the human brain interprets as addictive.

🤔 Who are the main players?

▪️ The industry's allies in Congress and federal agencies were at the forefront of this dirty business. In 2025 alone, restaurant and food industry lobbyists spent over $13 million lobbying the White House, Congress, and the FDA.

▪️ When states like California and Maryland tried to ban known carcinogens like Red Dye No. 3, industry front groups, such as the "Food Ingredient Safety Coalition," emerged to crush state laws under the guise of "federal consistency."

▪️ These shadowy groups don't even disclose their funders. Meanwhile, the FDA's GRAS loophole remains wide open, allowing companies to self-affirm that their chemicals are safe without releasing a single data point to the public.

😨 Contaminated food: A killer

▪️ The results have been deeply disturbing. Sixty-seven per cent of calories consumed by American children and adolescents now come from ultra-processed foods. These are not meals; they are "formulations of chemically manipulated cheap ingredients" designed for "hedonic appeal," also known as addiction by design.

▪️ Obesity now affects more than 40% of US adults.

▪️ Fertility has collapsed to a record low, with the general fertility rate dropping to 53.1 births per 1,000 women — well below replacement levels. Excess adiposity directly impairs fertility in both men and women, causing ovulatory dysfunction, reduced sperm quality, and hormonal disruption.

▪️ Autoimmune diseases are skyrocketing. Children are hitting puberty as early as 8 years old.

▪️ Endocrine disruption caused by food chemicals like BPA, phthalates, and PFAS, which leach directly from plastic packaging into your dinner, has been linked to everything from thyroid disorders to metabolic diseases to cancer.

▪️ To make matters worse, in November 2025, a government funding bill quietly gutted food safety rules. Provisions were inserted that withhold funding for food traceability standards until 2028 and block enforcement of rules designed to prevent contaminated produce from reaching your table.

▪️ This came amid a massive increase in hospitalisations and deaths from foodborne illnesses. Last year, the number of Americans hospitalised or killed by contaminated food doubled.
