On July 28, 2024, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the full implementation of a macroeconomic reform policy aimed at tackling Ethiopia’s longstanding structural economic issues. Amid these, there has been a surge of misinformation circulating on social media regarding money floating, salary hikes and money printing.

This monthly analysis highlights the disinformation trends observed in August concerning these economic changes and foreign exchange rates.

A TikTok video has been circulating that falsely claims Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taye Atske-Selassie, issued an official letter of representation for individual. The video is misleadingly captioned with information suggesting that Canada has made a statement regarding its need for manpower and that the Canadian government is willing to cover costs for enrollees who meet certain requirements.

Even if efforts by HaqCheck to contact the owners of the account to investigate further were unsuccessful, all other documents showing the letters and information distributed by the TikTok account are false.

On September 8, 2024, a Twitter account having over 10,000 followers shared a post alleging sporadic gunfire in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The tweet claimed that the situation was deteriorating due to an attack by Fano forces and mentioned that the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) was working to regain control of the area. This claim quickly garnered significant attention, amassing over 60,000 views on Twitter.

However, a thorough investigation using satellite imagery revealed that the footage was not in Addis Ababa.

Following the announcement of the Egyptian army's possible involvement in Somalia during the upcoming months. Tension rose in the midst of the most current political unrest in the Horn of Africa. Recently a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) claims in its video that Egyptian soldiers are training in Somalia for an attack on Ethiopia. However, the video cited is over seven years old and originates from a YouTube account unrelated to current events.

One post circulating on social media claims to offer a gateway to obtain a U.S. work visa by registering your name and country on an official-looking website. However, this process quickly turns suspicious when participants are required to invite at least 15 others to sign up, raising red flags about the legitimacy of the application.

HaqCheck has also contacted the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa through its press and Media officer/Spokesperson and proved that the site is not associated with the U.S. Embassy or U.S. government. For information on visas, applicants should look to the U.S. Embassy's social media and website for information on how to apply for visas.

A video gets more than 40 thousand views on TikTok claiming to show an earthquake incident that happened on Sunday, Oct 6, 2024, captioned “An Earthquake happening now in Addis Ababa around Sumit area”.

HaqCheck analyzed the alleged video to determine its credibility and found that the original video was shared on the official Twitter account of the NHK-Japan official on March 16, 2022. HaqCheck also conducted a further satellite investigation to detect the exact footage at the 00:18 second seen in the video footage, which is the Sendai Airport in Japan."

ከሰሞኑን በተለያዩ ማህበራዊ ሚድያዎች በዋናነት በዩትዩብ እና ቲክቶክ ላይ በተለያዩ የሃገራችን አርቲስቶች ስም በርከት ያሉ ሙዚቃዎች በመሰራጨት ላይ ይገኛሉ። እነዚህ ሙዚቃዎች በዋናነት ፖለቲካዊ ይዘት ያላቸው ሲሆን በአጭር ጊዜ ውስጥ በርካታ ተመልካቾችን እንዲሁም ግብረ መልሶችን ማግኘት ችለዋል። ይሁንና እነዚህ ሙዚቃዎችን ጠለቅ ብለን ስንመለከታቸው በArtificial Intelligence (ሰው ሰራሽ አስተውህሎት) የተዘጋጁ ሆነው እናገኛቸዋለን። በአሁኑ ሰዓት ከቴክኖሎጂ መዘመን ጋር ተያይዞ በሰውሰራሽ አስተውልሆት የሚሰሩ ነገሮችን መለየት አስቸጋሪ እየሆነ ቢመጣም በኦንላይን የሚገኙ እና በሰውሰራሽ አስተውህሎት የተሰሩ ድምፆችን እና ቪድዮዎችን የመለያ መሳሪያዎችን ተጠቅመን ስናጣራ እነዚህ ከሰሞኑ እየተለቀቁ ያሉት ሙዚቃዎች አብዛኛዎቹ በአርቲስቶቹ የተዘፈኑ እንዳልሆኑ እና በሰውሰራሽ አስተውልሆት የተሰሩ እንደሆኑ ማረጋገጥ ችለናል።
