A medical doctor in England who quit her practice once said “Take your degree and run” when she talked about her traumatic experience in medical school. Hana Ali is now pursuing her passion. She is a social entrepreneur on a mission to help more people learn about mental health, personal development, and social entrepreneurship.
There is an increasing trend on YouTube where medical doctors, especially in the US and UK, announce they are quitting their practice. They all have their reasons.
Even though we don’t openly talk about it like them. The situation is somewhat similar in Ethiopia. I have many friends who aren’t practicing medicine at the moment. And I sometimes ask them how they deal with people’s judgment and if they have some regrets.
Most of them don’t care what people say which is cool for them. But I am sort of what psychologists call “ an agreeable person”. Someone who wants to please people and doesn’t want others to be mad or disappointed in me.
Either way here is today’s message …
Simply graduating in something doesn’t make you an expert in that area. It is just an initial input so that you can start to develop your skills with further education and work.
Given the current situation in our country and worldwide in general it is common to see people working on something different from their major. As long as they are fulfilling what is expected of them that’s fine.
The point of a college education is not to find employment that is tailor-made to your degree. It’s so that you will be a critical thinker capable of identifying your strengths and areas of interest so that you can contribute positively in any field you are working on.
An accounting graduate who is working as a teacher is not an accountant but a teacher.
A medicine graduate working as a journalist is a journalist, not a doctor
You get my point 😄
According to 2020 data by WHO, Ethiopia has 1.039 Medical Doctors for 10,000 people. This is lower than neighboring countries like Sudan (2.626), Kenya (2.26), and Egypt ( 7.094). The number is 35.5 in the USA. The WHO recommendation is 1 Doctor to 1000 patients. Something to think about.
I know leaving medicine in a country like Ethiopia isn’t a decision that looks wise. But it is what it is…
If you already haven’t seen it this podcast episode explains some of the challenges Doctors in Ethiopia face and what we can do to address them.

A Wake-up Call for Ministry of Health to urgently seek alternative sources of funding amid USA’s freezing of its foreign aid
One of the executive orders signed this week by the newly elected American president, Donald J. Trump, is to freeze America’s foreign aid for a minimum of 90 days. This executive order includes freezing the already allocated budget of USAID i.e., to stop work. The foreign aid has been so crucial in fight against povert, disease, and illiteracy. It’s used to reduce poverty, promote health and prevent diseases, and promote peace, human right and democracy, among others.
Among the health programs expected to experience this funding freeze is the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR has played pivotal role in fight against HIV and saved as many as 25 million lives worldwide since it was first started in 2003.
In Ethiopia, PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) plays a crucial role in combating HIV/AIDS by providing significant funding for antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV testing and counseling services, infrastructure improvements in healthcare facilities, training healthcare workers, and supporting vulnerable populations like orphans and vulnerable children, to strengthen the national HIV response system. Over the last 21 years, PEPFAR has invested nearly 3 billion dollar to support the HIV/AIDS response in Ethiopia. Now, this strong partner in fight against the disease is ceasing its support.
As of recent data, over 1.1 million people are on antiretroviral therapy for HIV treatment. In addition, Ethiopia is one of the countries with highest burden of TB, and Malaria. It’s a public knowledge that nearly all of trainings and other HIV programs in our country have been funded by international partners—majorly PEPFAR, ICAP, CDC, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. These donors do it either as part of USAID or receive substantial financial support from the U.S. international aid fund, i.e., USAID.
Four compounding factors: significantly decreased government health expenditure in the past four years, the soaring inflation in the health sector, suspension of support from the above-mentioned international donors, and the impending budget shortfall the WHO will face following the United States exit from membership will certainly impact Ethiopia’s effort to control these diseases. Beside these, the country is also being repeatedly affected by conflict, drought, and other disease outbreaks in recent years.
As I tried to mention above, many of the drugs and financial aid for prevention, control, and treatment of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria come from these donors. Following Trump’s executive orders, these donors will no longer help in the same way they used to. In coming few months, this could open up a huge gap in the care we have been providing to the patients, and on the control of the diseases.
Ministry of Health should be alerted by these developments and find other alternative ways of funding different initiatives on these diseases. To ensure a consistent supply of drugs and to sustain their availability, the ministry has to work with and encourage capable local pharmaceutical companies on enhancing and initiating domestic production of these drugs. It needs to increase its engagement and collaboration with other donors and philanthropists like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Buffet Foundation, etc. And the ministry’s top leaderships have to inform and demand our political leaders to give a due attention to the likely ensuing health crisis.
I wrote this to express my concern and compassion for over a million people who are taking antiretroviral medication and for the hundreds of thousands of patients who suffer from tuberculosis each year in our country. And to the millions who are being infected with increased malaria epidemics in recent years.
Dr. Nuredin Luke
