Хотя инглиш и более скуден на бранные слова по сравнению с великим и могучим, принято различать 5 вариантов использования swear words:
1⃣ Descriptive — the use of swear words to convey their literal meaning: "Biden literally shits his pants"
2⃣ Idiomatic — the use of swear words as idioms: "I'm fucked up"
3⃣ Abusive — to offend or abuse other people: "his boss is a stupid scumbag"
4⃣ Empathic — expression to give a stronger emotion from the speaker: "you're a fucking genius!"
5⃣ Cathartic —  to spontaneously express the emotional burst: "oh, shit!"

Так вот, авторы проанализировали ругательства Белфорта и привели статистику: за весь фильм он использовал 322 нехороших слова, из которых большинство (73%) Empathic, на втором месте Abusive и Cathartic (~9%). Реже всего (лишь 12 раз) использовал ругательства в их буквальном смысле. Из чего делается вывод, что Empathic swearing appeared to be the most productive.

◼️ THREE WISHES

🐠👨‍🦳 On this day, May 14, 1835, Pushkin's "The Tale about the Fisherman and the Fish" was first published. So, it's a perfect day to talk about fishes wishes.

Итак, three wishes, три варианта использования wish:

1⃣ Самое простое wish — желание, или желать кому-то что-то.

Также wish работает как замена want, для разнообразия. Хочешь сделать что-то — это wish to. Хочешь что-то (иметь) — wish for.

2⃣ Wish как аналог "if only", "вот бы" — для выражения сожаления или мечты. В этом случае после wish ставим Past Perfect (когда речь про сожаление о прошлом "эх, если бы я тогда знал что доллар будет по 90"), или Past Simple (если речь про текущий момент "вот бы доллар стал снова по 30").

3⃣ You wish! (или You wish jellyfish!) — skeptical or sardonic comment implies that something will most likely not happen в значении "ага, щщас", "мечтай", "обломайся".

-"They can't arrest me, I haven't done anything wrong" -"Huh, you wish!"

-"See you later alligator!" -"You wish jellyfish!"

The most famous song that uses "wish" as "if only" — Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.

The story was written by Ruth Robbins, and the book became famous thanks to the Russian illustrator Nicolas Sidjakov (he was born December 16, 1924, in Riga, Latvia, of Russian parents who had fled the country during the Revolution).

Baboushka and the Three Kings gained popularity when it won the Caldecott medal as the best illustrated American children's book in 1961. Stylistically, these images will remind you of stained glass windows and the abstraction of Egyptian murals with Byzantine faces. The pages are done in five colors only (black plus blue, yellow, an orange-red, and green). The result gives the book a religious tone that makes you imagine you are reading from an illuminated manuscript done during the middle ages. 👇

Откуда вообще взялась история про старушку, заменяющую Санта Клауса в России, неужели Роббинс просто её выдумала? Вот и нет, возможно она и сама верила что это народная сказка. Потому что история появилась ещё в 19 веке, и придумана другой американской писательницей Аделаидой Скил, для которой прообразом русской Christmas babushka послужила ведьма Бафена. Бафена, бродящая по домам в сочельник, как раз и была фольклорным персонажем, вот только испанским, а не русским.
