👉 DOWN UNDER — это, как все уже догадались, Австралия. #etymology: The nickname Down Under came as a result of the European explorers who were looking for a land located below the continent of Asia. One of the famous explorers of the beginning of XIX century was Matthew Flinders. He was part of the team that coined the name "Down Under" with reference to Australia.
This name had become much more popular in 1980, after the song by an Australian rock band Men at Work (чем-то схожи с нашей Дюной начала 90х). 👇

👉 Mistletoe — по-русски омела — полупаразитное вечнозеленое кустарниковое растение: крепится к ветвям растения-хозяина, от которого получает воду и минеральное питание.
Омела токсична, но ей всегда приписывали лечебные (иногда даже чудодейственные) свойства и пытались использовать, например, при лечении эпилепсии. Знаменитый врач и алхимик эпохи Возрождения Парацельс собирал омелу, выращенную на черепах повешенных.
Mistletoe круче ёлки. Ещё со времён друидов (V - II века до н.э.) в Англии украшали омелой жилище в день зимнего солнцестояния для привлечения удачи. Позже стали делать это на Christmas day, обычно подвешивая омелу под потолком.
Another name of mistletoe is kissing bough, ветка поцелуев. В XIX веке стала популярна традиция: персону, случайно оказавшуюся под висящей веткой омелы, позволялось поцеловать любому 💋.
Такие дела. Такое вот незаслуженно утратившее широкое применение вызывающее поцелуи растение-паразит.

Pig Latin, или Igpay Atinlay — шуточный "зашифрованный" английский. В самом распространенном варианте Pig Latin все слова строятся одинаково: переставляем первую букву в конец и добавляем -ay.

The article was not widely read at the time, but Thompson garnered attention from other journalists for its unusual style. The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine editor praised the piece as a breakthrough: "This is it, this is pure Gonzo. If this is a start, keep rolling."
Considered the first use of the word Gonzo to describe Thompson's work, Thompson took to the word right away, and said, "Okay, that's what I do. Gonzo."

Как мы привыкли со школы, в инглише he и she используют для людей и иногда животных, а всё неодушевлённое это it. Но английский довольно стар, видоизменяется, и всегда есть остаточные явления, типа использования одушевлённых местоимений для предметов.
По неизвестной причине большинство таких случаев женского рода 💃. Причем часто они не совпадают с родом, который мы для них определили себе в русском. Ship, car, university, или, например, city — это всё she.
И если по-русски чаще всего род присваивается по окончанию слова, то английская этимология анафорического рода покрыта туманом — часто он просто перекочевал из других языков.👇

Вы наверняка замечали особенность женского американского произношения, когда слова или предложения произносятся с "хрипотцой" в конце. Так вот, эта особенность была не всегда так распространена, и имеет название.
👉 Vocal fry — a purring or rasp in the lower register of the voice, particularly at the trailing end of a word or sentence. As it became more common in the 2010-s (when many young women started to emulate this way of speaking after some celebrities), it became noticeable and annoying for many people. Some connect vocal fry with stupidity and even call it "twat growl ".
В начале десятых такое произношение оценивалось скорее негативно, проведенное научное исследование R.Anderson et al., 2014, [Vocal Fry May Undermine the Success of Young Women in the Labor Market], статистически подтвердило, что при оценке кандидатов на работу мужчины испытывали меньше доверия и считали менее компетентными молодых женщин с vocal fry.
