◼️ IELTS Informal Letter Starter

В General IELTS первая часть рейтинга — написать письмо.
Самый простой тип задания это мейл другу.

💡Многие, однако, недооценивают важность использования нужной лексики в informal letter, за что получают сниженный бал. Неформальному письму — неформальный слог!

Стиль письма должен быть понятен с самого его начала. Надёжным вариантом будет начать такое письмо с выражения надежды что у твоего друга дела норм:

👉 Hi there! I hope you’re doing well.

👉 I hope this email finds you well.

👉 I hope you’re having a great week.

👉 I hope all is well and you're not detained after the protest action.

How are things in New York? I hope you’re keeping cool during the heat wave.

◼️NO LOITERING!

В московском метро установят рекламо-пропагандные дисплеи со встроенными facial-recognition камерами — они, помимо прочего, будут фиксировать праздношатающихся лиц.

👉 Loitering — праздношатание. Это может пониматься как: standing or waiting around without apparent purpose ИЛИ walking slowly and with no apparent purpose.

Loitering has historically been treated as an inherent preceding offense to other forms of public crime and disorder, such as prostitution, begging, public drunkenness, drug dealing, etc.

История Loitering уходит корнями в позапрошлый век: в 1824 году в Великобритании был принят первый закон, запрещающий loitering в определенных местах. В США в некоторых штатах loitering до сих пор нелегален, и, особенно если ты негр, могут easily arrest you for loitering near your own home.
В России праздношататься можно (пока), однако в законе прописаны определенные зоны, нахождение в которых лиц без четко определенной цели запрещено (в т.ч. край платформы в метро).

◼️ IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE

Как перевести "кто так обзывается, тот сам так называется"? Как ни странно, в английском нет прямого аналога этой children saying.

Вот близкие по смыслу ответочки, когда тебя обозвали:

👉 It takes one to know one. Здесь it takes выступает в значении it requires. Т.е. смысл в том, что, на примере a killer: in order to know if I'm a killer, you too must be a killer.

👉 I know you are but what am I? — более прямая фраза, переводится дословно. На каждое следующее обзывательство повторяется снова и снова.



💡На заметку, smart way to use these frases — такими sayings можно (и нужно) отвечать на комплименты:

—You're so smart!
—Takes one to know one 😏

—You're cute
—I know you are but what am I 😘

◼️COOTIES

О шутке про children sayings в видео Тревора из предыдущего поста. Вот что он говорит:
Children sayings still have a lot of important wisdom for us as adults — that's why I still get my yearly boosters for my cootie shots. I mean, if a girl ever touches me, I'm all set.

👉 yearly boosters — ежегодная ревакцинация
👉 shot — прививка, укол

А что за cooties такие?
👉 Cooties — чисто американская штука, это воображаемые бактерии, которыми можно заразиться от ребенка противоположного пола, если он/она до тебя дотронется. Но, слава богам, от cooties есть прививка — нужно сказать Circle, circle, dot, dot, now I have a cootie shot! проводя пальцем соответствующие фигуры на руке (2 circles and 2 dots) — и ты в безопасности.

👉 Embrace имеет два основных значения:

▫️Обнимать, обхватывать

▫️Принимать, ценить

◼️BEING HIGH

Вы наверняка знаете, что to be high означает быть обкуренным или под дозой. Расскажу какими ещё словами часто описывают подобные состояния.

👉 Looped — это чаще про drunk, но и как аналог high тоже используют.

👉 Potted — здесь всё понятно, от слова pot, марихуана.

👉 Stoned — когда накурился до состояния, что you stare blankly into anything catches your attention.

👉 Zipped out (of someone's mind)— человек уже не соображает и full of smoking/drinking настолько, что больше уже не может физически.

👉 Zonked — следующая стадия (обычно от чего-то более тяжёлого чем pot): персонаж как бы спит на ходу и не осознаёт действий которые он совершает, все события как-будто происходят по отношению к нему. Таких стоит остерегаться.


Зачем это знать? Пригодится, если поедете в Канаду или US 😏

◼️ BE LIKE GAGARIN

Гагарина все знают и любят. И не только у нас. Кроме Гагарина, в инглиш во времена СССР пришло пара десятков слов, и часть из них закрепились. Вот некоторые:

👉 Sputnik — самое известное и популярное советское слово в английском. А вот слово pogrom (привет @SputnikiPogrom) пришло в инглиш задолго до Soviet era, ещё в 19 веке.

👉 Beluga — приняли в англ несколько веков назад, но стало популярным в советские годы скорее всего из-за развития киноиндустрии (круто же показать как русские закусывают водку белужьей икрой)

👉 Apparatchik — хотя в русском слово уже умерло, в англ используется до сих пор! Называют так партийных бюрократов. Или просто членов какой-либо группы/команды, в этом случае звучит с некоторой издёвкой или подколкой.

👉 Gulag — в US и Англии хорошо знают это название для Soviet prison camps и активно используют в лекциях о вреде коммунизма (во всяком случае так было до BLM).

👉 Perestroika — знали практически все в конце 80х, но сейчас помнят лишь бумеры.

◼️ KICK THE BUCKET

Немного о вёдрах.
👉 Bucket — ведро 🪣. Обычное ведро для воды, или пластиковое ведёрко от майонеза. Например, предка современных контейнеров для еды называли lunch bucket.

Но если услышите, что кто-то kicked the bucket, с пинанием ведра это скорее всего связано не будет.
👉 Kick the bucket — умереть (сыграть в ящик, дать дуба, откинуться, и любой другой синоним на выбор).

Доподлинно происхождение фразы неизвестно, но наиболее популярная версия — висельническая: человек вставал на bucket, засовывал голову в петлю, и... kicked the bucket.
