Остап Бендер часто использовал loopholes, проворачивая свои мероприятия и не нарушая при этом Уголовный Кодекс.

◼️ RIGHT AS RAIN

👉 Right as rain — не зная выражения, даже по контексту сложно понять, что оно значит, также как и с rain check.
Когда говорят right as rain, имеют в виду как огурчик, или в полном порядке.

Хотя первое упоминание идиомы датируется 1909г, корни её уходят в глубь веков. В XV столетии уже использовали выражение as right as..., всегда в значении чего-то удовлетворительного, удобного или безопасного. Например, right as a line означало правильный, верный.
Ну а так как для англичан нормальным является дождь, то right as rain в значении 'в порядке' довольно прочно прижилось.☔️

◼️ 10 ОТТЕНКОВ "OUGH"

Возвращаясь к английскому как-шлышится-не-пишется, есть замечательные 4 буквы -ough-, которые, в зависимости от слова, имеют кучу разных произношений.

К примеру, слова: though, rough, cough, through, bough, thorough. Последние 4 буквы в них одинаковые, но никакие 2 слова из этого списка между собой не рифмуются.

Иногда инглиш делает больно. Так-то.

👉 Lookie Lou (он же lookie loo, он же looky loo) — если прохожий остановился заснять или поглазеть на car accident, пожар, труп, задержание копами или любое другое красочное действо, он становится Lookie Lou. Посетитель пялится в магазине на новый макбук без планов покупать; это опять он — Lookie Lou.

По-русски раньше их называли зеваками.

◼️ LAME-ASS

Начать, пожалуй, стоит с того, что большинство слов с ass изначально появились от ass в значении осёл, а не задница.
Lame — хромой. Но в то же время lame-ass это не хромой осёл.

👉 Lame-ass — одним словом можно описать как отстойный, или беспонтовый (в зависимости от контекста: неприятный, неинтересный, скучный, занудный, немодный, некрасивый, плохой, идиотский). Грубым ругательством не является, но и на собеседовании лучше не употреблять.

Example:
I won't go to that lame-ass lectures anymore, the professor was extremely boring.
