Английский флот был некогда самым крутым в мире и жизнь значительного числа англичан была с ним связана. Поэтому многие слова и идиомы пришли именно с кораблей (см. toe the line / chop-chop / in Dutch).

#etymology
Знаете почему скорость кораблей измеряется в узлах (knots)? В середине XVIв моряки придумали делать это так: к бревну (log) привязывали верёвку и кидали за борт. Корабль уплывал от бревна, верёвка разматывалась. А на ней через каждые 47 feet (14.4 м) были завязаны узлы — сколько узлов проехало за борт за 30сек, столько узлов и скорость корабля. Ну ок. Это записывали в специальный бортовой журнал, log-book. Туда же затем стали заносить (logging) и другую инфу по состоянию корабля, погоду и т.д. Заодно появился и глагол to log в качестве "to enter into a log-book".
А в середине XX в появились компьютеры, и по-аналогии стали сохранять своё состояние и важные события в журнал log-book (для этого нужно было зайти, log in, в такой журнал).

Глагол bear (нести, приносить, рожать) хотя и имеет близкое происхождение с медведем, но всё же значения изначально были разные. Здесь больше интересна связь с give birth — в XVIIIв форма Past participle для "перенесён" стала borne, а для "рождён" — born; до этого оба значения имели одинаковую форму в прошедшем. Наверно вы уже догадались, что и русское слово беременность происходит от bear.

⬛️ KAFKAESQUE

👉 Kafkaesque — это не "кавказский", а кафкианский (от фамилии Франца нашего Кафки). В английском намного чаще используют это прилагательное, по сравнению с русским. А зря, потому что слово довольно ёмко описывает действительность. Кто не читал Кафку (не читайте) — его фишка это пропитанные абсурдом тревога, сюрреализм, бессмысленная бюрократия, и страх перед внешним миром.

Вообще, инглиш-спикеры любят использовать прилагательные на основе фамилий известных людей, так что смело добавляйте в свой словарный запас:
— Orwellian, от Оруэлла — про тотальный контроль;
— Freudian, от Фрейда — про подсознательные желания (оговорочки по-Фрейду);
— Dickensian, от Диккенса — про беспросветную нищету.

📝В написании такие от-фамильные прилагательные всегда с заглавной буквы.
