Yesterday, 9 March, was a new Black Monday — American stocks dropped down more than 7% a day. The last time such panic sell was in 2008. Поэтому сегодня — some financial English for you.

First rule:
💰 Don't put all your eggs in one basket — отличное выражение, которое понятно без перевода, и никогда не устареет. Круто тем, что подходит не только для финансов, а вообще для всего. Например:
It would be better if you applied to several universities instead of just one — don't put all your eggs in one basket!

💰 Diversify — диверсифицировать — собственно, смысл тот же

​​💰Dead cat bounce — отскок дохлой кошки. Биржевой сленг для ситуации, когда финансовый инструмент (акция, фьючерс, валюта) немного отскакивает после жёсткого падения.

Есть шанс, что скоро будем говорить так о рубле.😭

​​💰 Keep your head above water — оставаться на плаву, быть способным порешать свои трудности (в основном финансовые).

Example:
If credit cards are the only thing keeping your head above water, then your situation is much worse than I thought.

​​💰Cash cow — инвестиция, продукт или сервис, который регулярно и стабильно приносит прибыль.

Example:
Look, Sergey quit his job because his Bitcoin miner doing pretty well, it's his cash cow now!

​​💰 Chicken feed — смешные деньги, пустяки, мелочь.

Example:
You paid 50k rubles for this, are you crazy? It may be chicken feed to you, but that's a month's rent to me.

By the way, speaking about chop and chop-chop — there is another fun story about chopper.

Дело было в 50х, чопперами стали называть кастомные байки, так как их оригинальные части отрывались/отрубались — to chop parts off — и на замену ставились самодельные.

👉 Hoop — обруч, кольцо. Hula hoop — не профессиональный, "игрушечный" обруч для кручения на талии (в русском прижилось, и некоторые так его и зовут, хула-хуп).

👉 Jump through hoops — красивая идиома про преодолевать препятствия, лезть из кожи вон ради достижения какой-то цели.

Знаете в чём различие эпидемии и пандемии? Оба термина очень похожи, пришли в английский в одно и то же время (XIV-XVII в), поэтому there’s a lot of confusion.

👉 Epidemic — происходит от греческого epi- (among, upon) + dēmos (people). То есть это просто вспышка любого заболевания, передающегося от человека к человеку.

👉 Pandemic — от pan- (all) + dēmos (people). Здесь уже нечто большее, тут *все* люди вопасносте.

При эпидемии и при пандемии лучшее средство — карантин.

👉 Quarantine — во время вспышек чумы в Европе итальянцы (как ни странно) ввели правило для всех прибывающих кораблей — отстаиваться в порту, не выпуская никого на сушу. С итальянского quaranta giorni можно транслировать как "space of forty days", так что карантин по-определению это 40 дней, а не пара недель, так что готовимся 🍷

Бонусом — сокращение, которое набирает популярность последние дни: WFH — Working From Home 💃

👉 Crunch numbers — "хрустеть цифрами" — подсчитывать, анализировать, вычислять.
Crunching numbers может и компьютер и человек.

Many "experts" are crunching numbers about how many people 🦠COVID-19 can possibly kill.

Выражение пошло из ранней компьютерной эры, когда по улицам ходили динозавры, а данные хранилась на перфокартах и перфолентах. Crunch (хрустеть, перемалывать) отлично подходило для описания работы вычислительной машины с перфокартами.

👉 Put a dent (make a dent) — на самом деле эта идиома с зубами или стоматологами не связана. Почти одинаково часто юзают её в нескольких значениях:
1) оставить вмятину/след/пробоину (literally or figuratively)
