US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is warning of a potential disruption to power grids as well as the chance for the Northern Lights to be seen as far south as New York.
The flare - officially known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) - was observed on Saturday on the side of the sun directly facing our planet.
