School Dinners or... Surveillance Sandwich: Students to pay for lunch using facial recognition
Nine elementary schools have embraced a plan to deploy facial recognition technology to verify children's school lunch payments. They insist the system is faster and more hygienic - but have dodged the privacy issue of storing children's data.
"With Facial Recognition, pupils simply select their meal, look at the camera and go, making for a faster lunch service whist removing any contact at the point of sale," according to a flyer distributed to parents by a North Ayrshire school.
The local council defended the new system, explaining "pupils often forget PIN numbers and unfortunately some have also been victims of fraud.”

First Bitcoin Futures ETF to Debut on Wall Street
A bitcoin-linked exchange-traded fund (ETF) will officially be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Tuesday, under the ticker ‘BITO’, ProShares fund has announced.
“BITO will open up exposure to bitcoin to a large segment of investors who have a brokerage account and are comfortable buying stocks and ETFs, but do not desire to go through the hassle and learning curve of establishing another account with a cryptocurrency provider,” said ProShares CEO Michael L. Sapir.
What does it mean? It's not quite the same as investing directly in the cryptocurrency, but instead it creates a contract to buy or sell at an agreed-upon price at a later date.

FB's plans to create a new computing platform, which promises to connect people virtually. But will it simply allow the platform more control over our online lives?
"The metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities. And Europeans will be shaping it right from the start," Facebook said in a blog post.
The metaverse is a virtual world that can be accessed in real time by people using avatars, who can hold virtual meetings or buy virtual land and clothing or other digital assets, often paying with crypto.

China Evergrande MAKES Onshore Coupon Payment (Report)
China Evergrande Group has paid an onshore bond coupon due on Tuesday worth $19mn, according to Reuters, citing four sources.
One of their sources claims Evergrande, China's No. 2 developer, needs to prioritise its limited funds towards the domestic market where the stakes are much higher for the country's financial system.
Evergrande, which has $300 billion in debt and has missed a series in bond payments - will officially be in default if the company does not make good after a 30-day grace period for a missed coupon payment that had been due on Sept. 23.

EU CIVIL WAR: Poland FURIOUS at “dangerous” Brussels control
Although Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki assured the EU that his country is a loyal member of the bloc in a letter on Monday, he warned of the “dangerous phenomenon” of evolving into a body where states are “deprived of democratic control”.
While Morawiecki criticized the “language of financial blackmail” ahead of his address to MEPs Tuesday morning, his Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro urged Poland to take legal action against Germany for political interference of their judicial appointments.
Ziobro argued it was double standards that while in his country top court judges are elected by peers, in Germany they are chosen by politicians - and yet the EU is threatening funding withdrawal to Warsaw if apparent political influence is not eradicated.

UK supermarket shelves have been hit by massive shortages of the latest victims of the deepening supply chain crisis - Christmas foods, wine and kids’ toys.
An estimated 100k shortfall of HGV drivers has reportedly led the govt to consider turning again to army personnel to plug the widening gap between driver demand after they helped deliver fuel last week.
To top matters off, the Bank of England has also announced plans to raise the interest rate it had dropped in March to a historic low of 0.1%; city traders expect it to bump to 1%, the sharpest rise in 15 years.
