Alexander Selkirk asked to be left on Mรกs a Tierra island on 1 September 1704 because he believed the ship was unsafe. He survived alone there for about four years.

The ship later sank due to poor condition, and many crew members died or were lost, though some survived. Selkirk was rescued on 2 February 1709 and returned home. His story inspired the famous novel Robinson Crusoe.

Operation Paperclip was a secret U.S. program after World War II. It brought over 1,500 German and Austrian scientists to the United States. Many had been members of the Nazi Party. They worked on military, aeronautics, and space research. Their Nazi pasts were ignored so the U.S. could use their expertise and keep it from the Soviet Union.

The Greek god Hermes influenced the name of a modern scientific field: hermeneutics, the study of interpretation, especially the interpretation of texts.

Hermes was the messenger of the gods. The connection passed through the Greek word hermฤ“neuein, meaning โ€œto interpret,โ€ which was traditionally associated with Hermes.

In 1953, researchers at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) secretly gave LSD to people who did not know they were receiving it as part of Project MKUltra, a Cold War program investigating drugs and techniques that might influence human behavior.
Some experiments involved unwitting members of the public, including people in restaurants and other settings. The program was later exposed through U.S. congressional investigations, and many of its records had already been destroyed.

On September 3rd, 1928, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming returned from vacation to find that one of his bacterial culture plates had been contaminated by mold. He noticed that the bacteria surrounding the mold had been destroyed. Instead of discarding the spoiled sample, Fleming investigated it and discovered penicillin, the world's first widely used antibiotic. This accidental discovery transformed modern medicine and has saved millions of lives by treating bacterial infections.

In Tibetan fraternal polyandry, one woman could traditionally marry multiple brothers within the same family. The practice was found in parts of Tibet and the Himalayan region, where brothers shared a wife and the household's land and property remained undivided. Children born into the marriage were generally considered part of the same family rather than assigned separate fathers. The custom has declined significantly with social, economic, and legal changes in the region.

Sex can sometimes affect headaches in surprising ways. Some people with migraine or other headaches report improvement after sexual activity, possibly because orgasm is associated with the release of endorphins and other chemicals involved in pain regulation. However, sex can also trigger severe headaches in some people. A sudden, explosive headache during sex or orgasm can require urgent medical evaluation because similar symptoms can occur with serious blood-vessel problems in the brain.

In parts of Sardinia, Italy, a traditional cheese called casu marzu is made with the help of live cheese fly larvae. The larvae are introduced into pecorino cheese, where they digest the cheese's fats and create a very soft, creamy texture.

The name roughly translates to "rotten cheese" in Sardinian. The cheese is traditionally eaten with the larvae still present, although its sale has faced food-safety restrictions in Italy and the European Union.

Earthworms are hermaphrodites, meaning each worm has both male and female reproductive organs. Cutting one in two does not normally create two worms. In some species, the front part can regrow missing sections, while the rear part usually dies. So it is not exactly a cloning trick!

In 1999, The Matrix became one of the most influential science-fiction films of its era.

The film's famous "bullet time" sequences were created using a rig of multiple still cameras arranged around the actors, allowing the filmmakers to capture an action from many angles and then combine the images into a moving shot.

The technique became so closely associated with the film that "bullet time" entered popular culture as a term for the effect.

The anchoring effect is a cognitive bias in which people tend to rely heavily on the first number they encounter when making a judgment. For example, if a shirt is first shown at $50 and then discounted to $35, the second price may seem like a bargain because the first number becomes a mental reference point. The original $50 can influence the judgment even when it has little relevance to the shirt's actual value.
