Postpartum depression is a common but serious mood disorder that can begin anytime within the first year after childbirth.

Postpartum depression affects many new parents, but postpartum psychosis is a much rarer and more severe condition, affecting roughly 1–2 people per 1,000 births. It can involve hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, severe confusion, and rapid changes in mood or behavior, and is considered a psychiatric emergency.

The condition became widely discussed after Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, was accused of killing her three children on 24 January 2023. Her defense argues that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder at the time.
