Thousands of Tyson workers are losing their jobs in a single plant shutdown.
The company is closing its Joslin, Illinois beef processing facility, leaving more than 2,500 employees without work.
Workers arriving for their shifts were directed to the cafeteria and handed letters confirming the permanent closure.
Tyson has blamed one of the most severe cattle shortages the country has seen, high livestock costs, and expected losses of around $650 million in its beef sector this fiscal year.
The U.S. cattle herd is near a 75-year low, and beef prices have climbed roughly 80% since 2016.
Longtime employees described the scene as chaos mixed with anger and a sense of betrayal.

Their parole hearings are scheduled for September and November. If the Parole Board determines they can be safely released, all three could be free by Christmas.
After the plot was discovered, passengers were banned across the world from bringing large amounts of their liquids with them onboard flights.
