Lillian Margaret Burton and her husband Robert were part of the liberal opposition to Rhodesia. They were advocating for dismantling their own nation and sided with African nationalists.
On 8 May 1960, a 39-year-old housewife, was driving near Ndola with her two young daughters, Debbie, aged 12, and Rosemary, aged 4. A mob of African nationalists stopped her car, smashed the windows with stones, poured gasoline over her and her daughters, and set them on fire.

The girl fought back, broke free and ran outside screaming for help. Neighbors called 911 and officers arrived while the attack was still underway, pulling Reyes off her and arresting him. He faces charges including kidnapping, aggravated assault, burglary and cruelty to children, and jail records show an ICE detainer has been placed on him. The girl’s courage and quick response may have saved her life.
