On the night of Februarv 13, 1945, the Roval Air Force launched a massive air raid on the German city of Dresden, marking one of the most controversial bombing operations of World War Il. Over the course of two davs, British and American aircraft dropped thousands of tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the city, creating a devastating firestorm that engulfed large portions of Dresden's historic center.
The initial RAF attack began late on February 13 when waves of bombers targeted the city's infrastructure and densely built urban core. The combination of explosives, which damaged roofs and water systems, and incendiaries, which ignited widespread fires, produced conditions that fueled an intense firestorm. Temperatures soared, and hurricane-force winds fed the flames. The following dav, aircraft from the United States Army Air Forces conducted additional daylight raids, striking rail yards and other transportation targets.
