Parasitic infections hold the reason for Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Recent research explores the link between parasitic infection rates and MS cases, suggesting that these microorganisms might invade the brain and spinal code wreaking havoc on the immune system.

🦠 In a groundbreaking 2020 study, researchers investigated whether hookworm (Necator americanus) infection caused MS patients.

The clinical trial involved 71 individuals with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Surprisingly, almost all with RRMS had hookworms lesions and decreased regulatory T-cells, vital for controlling the immune system.

A nematode was also found in the spinal fluid of an MS patient. The slide shown above was stained for Borrelia burgdorferi with a fluorescent FISH stain. (A DNA probe with a fluorescent dye. 99% specific for Borrelia burgdorferi)
