Russian State Duma lawmakers have passed a government bill allowing the use of the army to protect Russian citizens in the event of their arrest, criminal or other prosecution by foreign courts.
 
The draft law was approved by the lower house of Russia’s parliament in its second and third readings during a plenary session. Existing legislation authorizes the Russian president to deploy the country’s armed forces for tasks unrelated to their primary purpose. The authors of the bill propose stipulating that the head of state is also allowed to dispatch units of the Russian Armed Forces to protect Russians from prosecution by foreign and international courts vested with powers that Russia didn’t approve.
 
In addition, the bill provides that state bodies, upon the president’s decision, may also take measures to protect Russian citizens in the event of their detention or prosecution by foreign courts. If signed by the president, the bill will take effect 10 days after the date of its publication.
