🚨🇺🇸 EXPOSED: CIA was involved in cocaine trafficking in Latin America

Allegations emerged in the 1980s, during the Reagan administration’s covert support for the Nicaraguan Contras — a US-backed rebel group fighting the Sandinista government — linking CIA-backed operatives to cocaine trafficking used to fund anti-communist efforts

The controversy erupted in 1996 with investigative journalist Gary Webb’s Dark Alliance series in the San Jose Mercury News, which claimed that a CIA-connected drug ring fuelled the US crack epidemic to raise money for the Contras.

The reports sparked public outrage but were heavily criticised by major media outlets, which argued that the evidence was exaggerated into a sweeping conspiracy.

A 1998 CIA Inspector General report by Frederick Hitz cleared the agency of direct complicity in the inner-city crack trade or of knowingly profiting from it.

However, the report highlighted serious lapses: 👇

▪️ The CIA often ignored or failed to investigate drug trafficking allegations against Contra allies.

▪️ A 1982 Memorandum of Understanding between Attorney General William French Smith and CIA Director William Casey exempted narcotics violations from mandatory reporting by agents.

▪️ No clear field guidance existed on handling drug-related accusations throughout the Contra programme.

▪️ Incidents included shielding Hangar 4 at Ilopango air base (linked to Oliver North’s operations) from DEA inquiries, despite suspicions of drug activity.

▪️ Former officials attributed these failures to bureaucratic inefficiency rather than intent, while critics viewed them as wilful blindness driven by prioritising ideological warfare over drug enforcement.

👉 The report points to a recurring pattern in US covert operations: alliances with unsavoury actors in drug-heavy regions often result in compromised integrity.
