Back in 2020, the Saudis recruited Chinese scientists to come to their big university in Riyadh to develop a technology that would extract lithium from oil runoff— a salt-water brine that is used to blast rock to reach oil in the fracking process.

They are expecting to extract enough lithium from oil runoff to produce one million batteries a year.

Right now, they control the IP on the technology, but it appears that they produced it with the help of Chinese scientists, so we’ll see how long that lasts. The major oil companies are incentivized to now run their own pilot programs bc of the success Aramco and Maaden had at the two sites in their pilot program.
