🇫🇷 A Paris 'court' has sentenced Marine Le Pen to 4 years in prison and banned her from running in elections for 5 years.

The court found the leader of the far-right party National Rally (Rassemblement National) guilty of misappropriating European Parliament funds. Le Pen was sentenced to 4 years in prison, 2 of which are suspended, and was banned from participating in elections for 5 years—effectively barring her from running for president in 2027.

According to the investigation, Le Pen and her associates used over €4 million—allocated for paying European Parliament assistants—to finance party activities in France.

Among those convicted are 8 others, including both former and current Members of the European Parliament.

Despite the court ruling, National Rally had previously scored a convincing victory in elections, confirming its popularity among voters.

In her public speeches, Le Pen has stated that the conflict in Ukraine can only be resolved through diplomacy and that sanctions against Russia are ineffective.

🇳🇪🇲🇱🇧🇫 Sahel states impose an import levy to fund their union

The 0.5% levy, effective immediately, applies to all non-humanitarian goods imported from outside the three members of the AES—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—and aims to support the bloc's activities.

This move effectively ends free trade with the wider West African region, represented by ECOWAS.

The AES, initially a security pact established in 2023, has evolved into the Federation of Sahel States, an aspiring economic and military union with unified biometric passports and closer integration.

🇨🇩 Convicted war criminal Lubanga forms a new rebel group in the eastern DRC to overthrow the government

A new rebel movement called the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CPR) has both political and military elements, including armed forces in three areas of the Ituri province of the eastern DRC, but has not yet launched military operations, Congolese rebel leader Thomas Lubanga told a UK media outlet.

The Congolese authorities have yet to respond to Lubanga's announcement on the creation of the new rebel group.

🇺🇳 The creation of the CPR threatens civilians and regional security, MONUSCO head Bintou Keita said at the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the DRC.

⚖️ Lubanga was convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2012 for recruiting child soldiers and sentenced to 14 years in prison deducting the time he had already spent in custody since his surrender to the ICC in 2006. He was released from prison in 2020.

After Lubanga's release, DRC President Felix Tshisekedi appointed him to the Ituri Peace Task Force. But in 2022, Lubanga was taken hostage by the rebel group CODECO and reportedly accused the government of complicity in his two-month detention.
