While Gantz and Gallant adopt a pragmatist’s approach to winding down the Gaza campaign, for Netanyahu it is his final stand as a political entity. Whipping the region up into a kinetic posture is the best way to maintain his position of power. He needs the Arabs to attack Israel, so his detractors will turn to him and the other warhawks for protection and retribution. October 7 did wonders for Netanyahu’s approval ratings, though that fleeting sentiment has now largely passed.

Point is, Gantz and Gallant will likely live to see tomorrow as political leaders. Netanyahu, not so much. And his corruption trial hasn’t even formally began.
