So on Breaking History, Matt and I have alluded to the British financing the schools that radicalized the locals in Egypt and led to the [re-]creation of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928.
I've traced it back to this guy, Lord Cromer, real name Evelyn Baring.
Baring was from a British-German family who formed Baring Bank— one of the oldest merchant banks in London— and went on to serve in the Royal Artillery and then the War Office starting in 1869, at about the same time that British Intelligence was formed by the War Office in 1873.
I have speculated that the British East India Company—which was coincidentally abolished by Parliament in 1873— transformed into British Intelligence. In 1871, Baring was promoted within the War Office to second captain and subsequently dispatched in 1872 to India to serve as the private secretary of the Viceroy of India, Lord Northbrook.

A year later, the East India Company was abolished and much of its personnel was folded into the War Office's newly formed intelligence agency that would later become known as British Intelligence.
After being promoted to major in 1878, Baring resigned from the army in '79 and became British Controller-General of Egypt, a position that was created after Egypt defaulted on their debt they acquired to finance the construction of the Suez Canal. Most of that debt was held by Baring Bank, and Evelyn Baring would become responsible for formally bringing Egypt into the British Empire.
It was Baring who become enamored by certain Muslim scholars, and financed new schools for them, which replaced the failing state schools and indoctrinated children with new and emerging radicalized interpretations of Islam.
