Energy Forecast

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธOil barely moves... Coal collapses?

Everyone talks about peak oil.

But this OPEC view of primary energy demand says the real transition is different.

Hereโ€™s what jumps out from the chart :

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Oil: 30.6% โ†’ 29.8% (almost flat)

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fossil fuels total: 79.8% โ†’ 67.1% (still two-thirds of the mix)

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Solar + wind: 3.5% โ†’ 13.5% (almost 4x)

๐Ÿงฑ Coal: 26.5% โ†’ 13.6% (nearly halved)

โš™๏ธ Natural gas: 22.7% โ†’ 23.7% (slightly higher)

โš›๏ธ Nuclear: 4.8% โ†’ 6.6% (rising, but still single digits)

A flat share for oil is not bearish if total energy demand grows. It can still mean a lot of barrels.

The biggest structural loser here is coal, not oil.

That is a massive reallocation of trade flows, power generation, and capex.

If markets keep under-investing in supply while demand stays resilient, the bad sentiment years can flip fast into a tighter tape.

#Copper mines are getting older... and lower grade!

Left chart (2023 operating mines >15ktpa copper):
Only 20% are young (0-20 years old)
40% are 31+ years
25% are 50+ years old

Right chart: Mined copper head grade plunging
From 1.1% in early 1990s
To 0.6% today
Forecast: -40% decline by 2030 (to 0.5%)

Result: More rock moved, higher costs, bigger environmental footprint to produce the same copper just as demand surges for EVs, renewables & AI data centers.

The supply challenge is real.

#Copper cable demand exploding thanks to the green transition!

Forecast (Kt copper in wire/cable, 2020-2040):

Traditional demand (construction, etc.): Flat, +0.5% growth
Renewables (wind/solar): +7%
Grid expansion: Massive +19%
EVs & chargers: +11%

Total wire/cable copper use surges from ~0.8Mt (2020) to 6.7Mt by 2040 driven almost entirely by electrification.

China, Europe & North America lead the boom (25%, 22%, 17% of increase).

No wonder copper supply is struggling to keep up.

Regional forces set to drive global copper demand boom!

Key trends shaping copper use:

#China : Slower growth but still dominant shift to consumer-led economy
#Europe : Renewable energy push + climate targets + rising BEV market
Northeast Asia : Demographics + massive floating offshore wind growth
#India : Population/economic boom + urbanization + industrial/renewables surge
ASEAN: Urbanization + emerging auto manufacturing hub
North America: Reshoring manufacturing + domestic expansion
South/Central America : New renewables capacity + #Brazil auto industry growth

Electrification, renewables, EVs, and grids worldwide = structural copper supercycle ahead.

Copper supply crunch !

Demand outlook surging to 40 Mt by 2040 (from ~25 Mt in 2015), driven by grids , other energy tech, construction & more.

Mining requirements primary mined supply needed (dashed line) rising sharply, but expected from announced projects (orange bars) peaks 30 Mt then declines to 15 Mt by 2040.

Result: Massive shortfall ahead unless way more projects get greenlit. Declining grades + delays = structural deficit.

The copper supercycle is real and supply is the bottleneck.

First Quantum Minerals just sold a copper mine in Spain for up to US$190 million.

Las Cruces is a past-producing copper operation, fully permitted, with infrastructure in place and a clear redevelopment pathway. On paper, itโ€™s exactly the kind of asset most mid-tier miners say they want.

Private equity continues to snap up these types of mid-tier assets. Resource Capital Funds is taking the long view here. Patient capital. Comfortable underwriting development risk in exchange for upside that listed producers canโ€™t currently justify.

The structure tells the real story, roughly US$45 million upfront. A loan note. The balance pushed into milestone and performance-based payments. This isnโ€™t a fire sale, but itโ€™s also not a bet the farm acquisition.

Private capital is stepping into complexity, taking on development risk. Backing assets that need time, patience, and disciplined execution.

Electrification hasnโ€™t slowed. But ownership of future supply is quietly shifting toward groups willing to wait and play the long game. Thatโ€™s where the next cycle is being built.
