World football civil war: Europe threatens to boycott World Cup

The world of football has officially been thrown into a state of absolute chaos. In an unprecedented move, all 55 member associations of UEFA have voted to boycott the World Cup if FIFA goes ahead with its controversial plan to sell stakes in its tournaments to private equity investors.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino – who has recently been busy courting controversy and hanging out with Donald Trump – tried to push through a deal to commercialise the sport’s greatest legacy. FIFA even offered a staggering $40m bonus per nation to buy their support. But Europe rebelled in an emergency meting that was described as downright toxic.

UEFA’s statement was clear: “The World Cup is not for sale.”

If the boycott is triggered, it will apply to all FIFA competitions, including the men’s, women’s and club World Cups. The first real test of this historic position will come in October during the Women's World Cup finals. The fact that FA chair Debbie Hewitt, one of FIFA's vice-presidents, was kept completely unaware of Infantino's secret conversations proves how corrupt and insular FIFA's leadership has become Infantino has finally gone too far.
