Iran has confirmed one of its ships was hit with casualties, and President Zelensky has publicly claimed the operation.
This matters because the Caspian has become a key corridor for military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, moving drones, components and other supplies beyond the reach of the Black Sea.
If these strikes become a sustained campaign, the implications extend far beyond the battlefield.
They could disrupt one of the few remaining secure logistics routes linking Russia and Iran, adding another layer of risk to regional trade, energy infrastructure and shipping.
The key question now is whether this was a one-off operation or the beginning of a broader effort to pressure Russia and Iran's logistics network.
