⚠️The Japanese Yen weakness is spreading FAR BEYOND the US Dollar:

The Bank of Japan's nominal effective exchange rate index has fallen to the lowest level on record.

This tracks the Yen against a broad, trade-weighted basket of ~60 currencies, including the US Dollar, Chinese Yuan, euro, and British pound.

This comes as the yen has weakened beyond 163 per dollar, its lowest level since 1986, pressured by a wide interest rate gap with the US, elevated oil prices, and concerns over Japan's fiscal position.

This broader currency weakness deepens concerns about imported inflation, since a weaker trade-weighted yen raises import costs across a far wider range of trading partners, not just from the US.

Meanwhile, the BoJ is reportedly open to raising rates faster than economists currently expect, with another hike seen as soon as December, after last month's increase already took rates to a 31-year high of 1%.

Previously, Japan's Ministry of Finance spent ¥11.73 trillion, or $71.9 billion, intervening between April 28th and May 27th, yet failed to stop the yen from hitting fresh 40-year lows.
