This 24 year old Korean trader made β©300 million with borrowed money, then lost it all in four weeks.
Lee Seung-ho, a university student in Seoul, took a 500% margin loan and turned 20 million won in savings into 300 million, a 15x gain, Per Reuters.
Then Korean stocks started crashing violently, his brokerage forced liquidations, and his account fell below his original investment.
He says he plans to take out another margin loan once he saves up enough money again.
His story isn't unusual, it's the system working as designed.
Margin loan balances in Korea's stock market hit a record 38.63 trillion won on June 24.
Broader investor debt, including other forms of borrowing, crossed 60 trillion won by the end of May, right as Korea's $4.1 trillion market became the world's most volatile.
On Thursday, authorities banned new listings of leveraged ETFs tied to individual stocks, just two months after approving them.
The head of the Financial Supervisory Service has already admitted the approval was rushed.
Leverage accelerates losses on the way down far faster than it builds wealth on the way up, and right now, an entire generation of Korean retail traders is finding that out the hard way.

πΊπΈ JUST IN: President Trump is preparing a new round of tariffs on up to 60 countries as the current 10% global levy nears expiration, per FT.
π¨ TRUMP IS ABOUT TO HIT DOZENS OF COUNTRIES WITH NEW TARIFFS THIS WEEK.
The current 10% global tariffs are set to expire on Friday.
Instead of letting them lapse, Trump is preparing a new round of tariffs on up to 60 countries, this time using a forced labor investigation instead of the emergency powers the Supreme Court already struck down earlier this year, as per FT.
The investigation found that all 60 countries, including China, the EU, Japan, Canada, and Mexico, failed to properly ban imports of goods made using forced labor elsewhere in their supply chains. Countries with at least a partial ban would face a 10% tariff.
Everyone else would face 12.5%.
Using this method avoids the exact legal problem that got Trump's original tariffs thrown out.
Instead of one sweeping emergency order, the administration is now building tariffs through a slower, narrower investigation that's much harder to challenge in court.
Senior officials have reportedly been pushing Trump to hold off and honor the trade deals already made with partners in 2025, especially with midterms approaching and gas prices already back above $4 a gallon because of the ongoing conflict with Iran.
