Court session starts

The ICJ judges are now taking their seats inside the Peace Palace at The Hague and court proceedings are about to begin.

South Africa argued on Thursday that “as a matter of extreme urgency” Israel must immediately cease military operations in Gaza, including Rafah, and withdraw from the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Gaza death toll rises to 35,303

The death toll in Gaza from Israeli attacks since October 7 has risen to 35,303 people.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that another 79,261 have also been wounded in those attacks with a number of other victims trapped under the rubble and on the roads as ambulance crews and rescue workers cannot reach them.

In the last 24 hours, 31 people were killed and 56 wounded by Israeli attacks.

‘Immeasurable cost’ as Gaza’s children still out of school

Since the war on Gaza began, all of the enclave’s schools have closed, leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children without formal schooling or a safe place to stay.

ICJ requests Israel provide more information about aid to Gaza’s ‘evacuation zones’

Before closing the hearing, the ICJ has put a question to the Israeli delegation about humanitarian conditions in its declared “evacuation zones” in Gaza.

Judge Georg Nolte read the question: “Can Israel provide information about the existing humanitarian conditions in the designated evacuation zones, in particular al-Mawasi, and how it would ensure safe passage to these zones, as well as the provision of shelter, food, water, and other humanitarian aid and assistance to all evacuees that are and can be expected to arrive in these zones?”

Israel has been asked to submit a written reply to the question no later than tomorrow, May 18, at 4pm, the court said.

Participant shouts ‘liar’ as Israel makes final remark

Tourgeman has read Israel’s final submission to the court.

“The State of Israel requests the court to reject the request for the modification and indication of provisional measures submitted by the Republic of South Africa,” the statement says.

As Tourgeman delivered the statement, someone inside the court shouted “liar”.
