So much excitement’ as displaced families gather belongings to return to their areas by Hani Mahmoud, Reporting from Deir el-Balah, central Gaza
As of this moment, things seem to be going OK, with no violations reported since the ceasefire took effect.
There have been no more bombs, no more fighter jets, and no more drones. The only sound of gunfire we hear is from celebrations in the streets — gunshots and fireworks have been frequent.
And this celebration, this sense of happiness, is turning into action on the ground. Here, in the hospital courtyard, people are starting to dismantle their tents and head back to their homes in areas from which they were forced to evacuate over the past 15 months.
This is the first time that people are returning home, given that both the northern and southern parts of Khan Younis, as well as the eastern parts of the city, remain red zones with a heavy Israeli military presence.
What we are witnessing here is families excitedly gathering their belongings — whatever they managed to collect during their stay at the hospital. There is so much excitement on their faces as they leave the hospital gates.
When we asked them where they were going, they said, “We’re going home.”
Those words are incredibly heartwarming and have brought many people to tears. It’s time for them to return to their homes, and, hopefully, they will find them still standing.
