Washington Blames Moscow for Sanaa Support: New Evidence of Naval Blockade's Effectiveness
In a recent report, Washington has reiterated its accusations against Moscow for allegedly supporting the Ansar Allah movement in jeopardizing international navigation in the Red Sea. According to the Wall Street Journal, Russian assistance has enabled the Houthis to launch missile and drone attacks on Western vessels, with claims that they are utilizing Russian satellite data transmitted through Iranian Revolutionary Guard connections.
Previous accusations from Washington included Moscow's provision of air defenses and anti-aircraft missiles to Sanaa, with Foreign Policy noting that Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout appears to be negotiating with the Houthis with Kremlin approval. The magazine warns that any supply of Russian weapons would likely occur with President Vladimir Putin’s knowledge and could signify an escalation in maritime terrorism.
Contrary to US claims that the Houthis have avoided targeting Chinese and Russian ships, maritime analysis from Lloyd's reveals that 387 Yemeni attacks on commercial vessels were recorded, including eight incidents involving Chinese ships. The analysis highlights a sharp decline in the passage of Western and Israeli-linked ships through the Red Sea, indicating that the Ansar Allah movement has effectively imposed a naval blockade on "Israel". As a result, many vessels are now rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope.
From July 1 to October 15, 1,659 ships passed through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a significant drop from 5,034 during the same period in 2023. Yemeni forces are reportedly targeting ships carrying Russian cargo or bound for China and Iran if they have ties to Israeli ports, with European vessels from countries like Switzerland and Denmark becoming common targets. Notably, no Russian-owned ships have been attacked, except those caught in the vicinity of other targeted vessels, raising suspicions about a possible connection between Moscow and Sanaa.
