Part 1
DALAL MUGHRABI (1959-1978) was a young Palestinian-Lebanese militant affiliated with Fatah (Palestinian National Liberation Movement). Born in Beirut, she joined Fatah at the young age of 13, receiving military education and training in weaponry and guerilla warfare. A few years later, she graduated from the Palestine Red Crescent Society's nursing courses. She joined the Jarmaq (Student) Battalion at age 16 during the Lebanese Civil War, during which she led an operation named Kamal Adwan. It is also reported that Mughrabi broke off an engagement to another fighter as he was displeased with her taking up arms in service of Palestinian liberation.

During the Kamal Adwan operation when she was only 19, Dalal and her team - named the Deir Yassin Squad - took control of a bus in the Majan Michael settlement, directing it towards Jaffa, "Tel Aviv", and soon after took the passengers of a second bus hostage. In Dalal's address to the hostages, she stated, "We do not want to kill you. We are only holding you as hostages to free our brothers detained in the prisons of your alleged state...We are a people demanding their right to their homeland, which you stole. What brought you to our land?" Dalal then took out of the flag of Palestine, placed a kiss upon it, and said: "My country, my country, you have my love and my heart."
The fedayeen were not confronted by the "Israeli" forces until they passed by the outskirts of "Tel Aviv", where Dalal soon ordered her team to engage in battle after negotiations failed. Dalal was martyred during these battles in which many of the hostages were either wounded or murdered by the occupation forces.
Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani wrote, "After a thousand years, Arab children will read the following story: On the eleventh day of March 1978, eleven men and women were able to establish the Republic of Palestine inside a bus, and their republic lasted 4 hours. It does not matter how long this republic lasted.. The important thing is that it was founded. Dalal established the Palestinian Republic and raised the Palestinian flag."
